The Mission to be included

My Ms Wheelchair NY 2018  platform is to bring self advocacy into schools and build an inclusive environment  besides making sure students with disabilities are able to go on trips especially wheelchair users. What ways can I make schools more inclusive. So what about starting a student government council for students with disabilities in schools.

 As many of you may not know before being Ms Wheelchair NY 2018 I started my   very own advocacy group called Voices of power for people with disabilities from adults to youth who are students with disabilities.  

 When I meet with my students a few weeks ago for our monthly advocacy group meeting  we discussed about how the can start a student council for students with disabilities.. their ideas had me going.. and i been saying they will make a differences.. the mention wanting to start groups etc in their schools I offered to be on their planning committee to serve from a student perspective role..as a graduate of this school system.. and help them start groups they are interested in..I want to be there for them and see their voices be bought to the table and heard.. So excited and proud.. to how this shines through..

 They will have the opportunity to make a decision.. vote on things they want to see happen in their school and have a seat at the table and the principal has open their door to hear their concerns and ideas.

 This is only the begging

Attended my 1st Cerebral Palsy

Oct 7. 2019 I attended my first Cerebral Palsy Conference in Hartford CT.through an organization called Green Mountain Support Services  To those who may not know I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 9 months old.  When I found out  out this conference related to my disability Cerebral Palsy. I knew I wanted to attend because throughout my childhood life nothing like this existed. For the 1st time I was surround by people with different types of cerebral palsy doing amazing things.. I also hosted my 1st breakout session called Dream Big Self Confidence through Self Advocacy..where i shared my story through my message through hope there is possibilities it was truly a pack house. I also had an expo table displaying my journey as Ms Wheelchair NY 2018. I might some amazing people such as the young lady in the photo above. The lack of accessibility for students with disabilities in schools

Recently I been looking at news media articles discussing the lack of accessibility in nyc public schools.. This also means the ability to fully access the school building. When I was going to school in NYC public schools I always had it in my mind that all public schools were wheelchair accessible weather the location is on the side of the building. At that time I thought that was okay. We struggle to be included and fit in with our peers.. be apart of the school community even if it's just simply being able to attend a school trip with their classmates. Yet students with disabilities being shut out of schools. Not only students with disabilities are being shut out of schools due to the lack of accessibility.. Parents have less options on were their child can attend school and it unfortunately the same for potential and actual employees with disabilities within the NYC public schools especially for those who are wheelchair users.
