Spread Kindness

As an advocate  and person with the disability with lots of lived experience

I just wanted to share with you as we go into finishing up the holidays of 2022 and going into the new year 2023 how important it is to spread kindness because I know how hard it is for families of children/youth or even adults with disabilities  during this time of the year.

Many children with disabilities or other medical conditions spend time in the hospital during the holidays.

Many families stay home unable to spend  time with other family members or friends here is why?  keep in mind different situations vary for each family

Here are a few situations why families, caregivers or person with a disability ( weather you are a kid, young person or adult with a disability ) may not be able to spend time with friends or family

  • Other families home is not wheelchair accessible

  • Family or friends may not be understanding in terms of disability and how it impacts your child or you as a family especially in terms of caregiving

  • You're child may not like crowds

  • You're child may be sensitive to noise

  • Your child may have behavior needs that not families outside of your home understand and can sometimes  lead to other family viewing you as bad parents

  • Transportation issues

  • Medical needs that makes it a challenge to leave home

So What can you do to spread kindness in these situations?

Check in with someone you know in this situation

Send cards

Make your home inclusive as possible

If possible visit the family

In what ways would you spread kindness?
